I conquered my fear this week and touched raw meat, a fear I have always had. It was not as bad as I thought it was. It is more mind over matter than anything. I was also very careful washing everything thoroughly with hot water, because working with raw meat is dangerous and can cause people to get really sick. Salmonella is a dangerous bacterium on raw meat that when ingested into the body attacks the stomach and the intestine. It can cause a person to become severely ill.
That leads me to this week’s lesson: Salmonella is easy to avoid as long as you are conscious of what you are doing. There are a few basic steps to avoiding salmonella:
1. Always wash your hands with warm water and soap before preparing food.
2. Continuously wash your hands after moving from working with one food to another.
3. Wash your utensils properly with hot soapy water.
4. Use a new dish towel everyday and wash dish towels at no cooler than 60 oC.
5. Always store food in the refrigerator, never leave meat out. If you follow these steps you will not have to worry about salmonella. It helped me overcome my fear of touching raw meat.
I only had one injury this week and that was with the knife. I am still getting used to using the knife to slice things. I missed when slicing the pepper and sliced my thumb. Nothing a band-aid can not fix.

I was not interested in cooking before my marriage. My mom cooked all the time for me.
One day I have to cook by myself for me and my husband. I did not know how to cook or what kind of foot I could cook first time.
I loved chicken. I just grilled or boiled it without any spicy. It made me sick and tired of it. Therefore I bought some books. One of them is an Asian cook book. It had a recipe of stir vegetable and chicken. It is one of my favorite food. It includes lots of nourishment.
Mmm… For the record that sounds delicious! I think this is a really creative topic to discuss, I myself can not cook at all!
I experienced my first year away from home last year at college and if it wasn’t for the cafĂ© and cup of noodles I would of starved. Everyone in my family including my younger sister all cook, they will cook dinners, but they know not to ever ask me.
This year though, now that I am back home, I have grown a slight interesting cooking. So I’ll sit in the kitchen when my mom is cooking and ask questions. She had me cut up some meat a couple of weeks ago and I was a little disturbed by it as well.
I am going to keep up on your page, maybe you can help me get through this whole cooking experience.
Hope your finger is not too bad!
I am somewhat a newbie with cooking myself. It makes me frustrated at times, because I knew the meals that I want to have, but don’t know how to cook them. I’m Mexican and I love Mexican food, so it’s a torture not to be able to have what I want.
The whole raw meat thing, I believe many just don’t want to get down and dirty. They might have the feeling of nasty and it can’t wash off. I don’t know if that was your case or not.
It’s alright on age thing on wine, they have non-alcoholic wine. I actually never tried it, but I definitely look into that to see if there are any good recommendations out there.
Interesting post...definitely link us to the Netdoctor site so we can directly and easily explore those great points you provided.
Do you know where your fear of raw meat came from? Can you recollect any experiences from childhood that might have caused it? Do others suffer the same condition (I bet they do!).
Chicken & vegatable stir fry sounds like something I want to try to make at home on my own. It sounds yummy! I am not big cook myself and I recently also started having to learn how to cook since I can't get away with just giving my son a jar of baby food to eat anymore.
I like the way you touch on the potential hardzards of raw meats and what you can do to avoid becoming ill from mishandling it. I will definitely keep the tips you give on mind when cooking raw meats.
Wonder what your going to try to make next? and maybe if it goes well for you...I might try it myself.
